Designed by Nature Reflections owner, Theresa Touhey, the Avery Zebra Long Wing Butterfly Necklace was created out of pure love. It was inspired by Avery Cobbs, who had taught Theresa the joys of feeding wild birds and growing native plants that attract butterflies in her yard. The Zebra Long Wing was his favorite butterfly and whenever he or she saw the butterfly, they would immediately think of each other and the love they shared.
This necklace is handmade from Genuine Fine 925 Sterling Silver and is plated in Sterling for extra shine. The part of the butterfly that is normally black has a satin finish and the part that is the stripes and markings as well as the body is polished and shiny. This contrast gives lots of dimension to the necklace. The necklace is 18” (45.7 cm) long and there is a 2” (5 cm) extender. The butterfly itself is approximately 1.5” (4 cm) across. A great every day necklace that can be worn to work or with your casual attire. The wings have a nice little curve to them and the antennae does as well... you could easily imagine this cute butterfly flitting about and pollinating the flowers.

A little about the Zebra Long Wing Butterfly…
These adorable butterflies are usually found in Florida and Southern Texas. Their range is from South America north through Central America, West Indies, and Mexico to South Texas and peninsular Florida. However, they will sometimes migrate north to New Mexico, Nebraska, and South Carolina.
The zebra longwing, Heliconius charitonia (Linnaeus), was designated the state butterfly of Florida in 1996. Frequently found in forested settings, you can also spot them subtropical hammocks, forest margins, shrubby thickets, and adjacent open areas. They can be regularly seen in many butterfly gardens, suburban yards and parks- especially in areas where there are lots of opportunities for pollen.
Avery was an artist living in Central Florida, his medium of choice was acrylic paintings though through his life he had done sculpture and paper cutting as well. He was an advocate for the animals and did lots of volunteer work for animal causes. He and Theresa met in January of 2014 and fell in love, quickly bonding over their share interests in nature, art, animals, travel and more. Avery passed away from a sudden illness in August of 2017.
